Snakes are excellent at a lot of things, including being incredible escape artists, swimming, blending into their surroundings, and for some snakes, even climbing.
As part of our pest control services, we often inspect all parts and levels of homes. We have found snakes and snake skins in basements, crawl spaces, inside main levels of homes, and inside of attics as well. YES, I SAID ATTICS!
Rat snakes / black snakes are excellent climbers. I have found rat snakes in attics on numerous occasions. Customers of mine have told me stories about how they were getting something out of the attic, and have come face to face with a black snake.
Some important things to know about rat snakes / black snakes:
- Rat snakes are excellent climbers.
- Rat snakes are non-venomous, and do a great job at keeping venomous snakes away
- They often enter attic spaces in search of warmth during cold winters.
- Just as humans, snakes have basic essential needs, such as shelter and food. If snakes are living in or around your home, you must consider the fact that there is a food source there for them as well, such as rats and mice. If you have a rodent problem, you will likely eventually have a snake problem. Get rid of the rodents / food, and you will probably get rid of the snakes.
