Many of us have seen opossum’s before, but most of the time when we see them they tend to be dead on the side of the road. I am always a little surprised at how many people have never seen a live opossum. They are very common here in Georgia.
Opossums can hideout and live in lots of different places including stumps, haystacks, attics, garages, culverts, hollowed out trees, rock piles, under buildings, and in the abandoned burrows of other animals. They are not territorial. Opossums are non-aggressive and non-destructive. They will not harm people or pets. They are more immune to many diseases than other animals, and are far less likely to carry rabies.
Believe it or not, opossums are beneficial to the environment because they eat insects (pests), snails, and slugs. They have an incredible resistance to poisonous snakebites such as those from rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and other venomous snakes. Opossums do not hibernate, and they are active at night.
