If a rat or a mouse eats poisoned bait blocks, and then my cat eats the poisoned rodent, will my cat get sick? I have been asked this question countless times!
The effects on the cat will depend on the type of bait block that was used. If the bait block that the rodent fed off of contains an acute active ingredient, there is no danger of the cat becoming sick or dying, otherwise known as secondary kill. If the bait block that the rodent fed off of contains an anticoagulant as an active ingredient, a cat eating an infected rodent will likely get sick, or even die.
Can my cat get to the bait blocks?
If used correctly / per the label, the bait blocks should be placed in locked bait boxes that are animal and child tamper-resistant. The boxes usually contain securing rods to keep the bait in place, as well as ramped entry holes to keep kids and non-target animals from reaching the bait.
