Believe it or not, one of the main ways that roaches and other insects get into homes is through doors and windows. I have lost count of the amount of customers homes that I have been to that complain of bugs getting into their homes, only to find out that they leave their windows (without screens) open at night, or leave their doors into the back yard open so their animals can get in and out. If you leave doors and windows open, you will get bugs into your house.
Bugs getting in through doors and windows is not always a result of the door or window being open. A lot of times, bugs are able to make entry through these areas because they do not seal up well. Make sure that they are closing properly, and that the weather stripping and / or caulking around them is in relatively good shape. A good way to to tell if your door seals up well is to go inside, turn off all of the lights, and look at the door to see if you observe any day light coming in from any side of the door. If you can see daylight coming in, it is a big enough hole for bugs to get through as well.
