Do termites look like ants?

Termites and ants look similar in a lot of ways, and are often mistaken for one another. To the untrained eye, mistaking termites for ants can be a costly mistake.

Termites have straight antennae, whereas ants have elbowed, or bent antennae. Termites are straight and solid bodied, whereas ants have pinched waists. Flying termites have equal length wings, whereas flying ants have different length wings.

For further help with identification, refer to our termite page for a side by side picture comparison of the two.

If you suspect that you may have termites, the best thing to do is to have a licensed pest control company perform an inspection. Most companies will perform this inspection at no cost
