In our previous blog article we talked about how the ladybug is seen by many as a nuisance pest. In this article we will talk about natural, do-it-yourself ways of keeping them out of your home. If they have already made entry into your home, we will also talk about a couple of ways of dealing with them.
If your home is a magnet for ladybugs, but they have not made it inside yet, keep ladybugs out of your home by:
- Turning off lights near entrances.
- Keeping doors and windows closed.
- Making sure window screens are properly fitted and do not have any tears.
- Making sure all cracks around windows, doors, pipes, and other openings are sealed
- Installing an outside light trap. Do not do this unless you already have large numbers trying to get into your home. An outdoor light trap could attract additional ladybugs to the area.
- Placing cloves around doors, window sills, and baseboards. Cloves act naturally to keep the ladybugs away.
Read our article titled “How to pest proof your home” for additional information on the above subject.
If you have not been successful in keep the lady bugs out by the above methods, remove ladybugs from your home by:
- Vacuuming up surfaces where you see ladybugs. Don’t forget to also vacuum around window sills and door frames. Remove and dispose of the bag outside immediately. If you choose to release the ladybugs, make sure that you are far away from your home when you do so.
- Place cloves in any indoor areas where ladybugs are congregating.
- Burn lemon scented candles in areas where you notice ladybugs. Burn the as often as possible to drive the ladybugs out.
- Place double-sided tape or glue boards along door frames, window sills, corners, and baseboards to trap the ladybugs. You can then easily dispose of them.
- If all else fails, spray the lady bugs directly with a lemon scented cleaner. This will kill them pretty quickly.
