Aeration is the process of using a machine called an aerator, to make holes in your lawn. There are different types of aerators on the market. A majority of them slice or cut into the yard, pushing down and further compacting areas of the soil. The type of aerator that we use, and recommend, is known as a core aerator. Core aerators remove plugs of dirt from the ground.
The purpose of making these holes is to allow your lawn to breathe, and to be able to absorb nutrients and water. Regardless of which type of grass you have, aerating is a very important part of your lawn’s success.
Benefits of core aeration:
- Loosens up hard, compacted soil
- Promotes stronger, deeper grass roots
- Creates better air flow between the roots and the surrounding environment
- Allows water to reach more critical areas
- Increases lawns drought tolerance
- Allows fertilizers and other nutrients to reach the root base
- Helps to reduce the thatch layer
