We all want our lawns to be beautiful, lush and green next year. As the weather is getting colder in Georgia and we are pulling out our winter clothes, our lawns need some specific seasonal attention and care as well.
Winter 2018 officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere on Friday, December 21 and ends on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 Eastern Time. Georgia weather typically brings frost, snow and an occasional ice storm.
Here are some seasonal lawn care tips to prepare for winter:
Over Watering
It is easy to overwater during the winter if you keep your automated sprinkler system at the same schedule. Make sure your sprinkler system is altered for the correct amount of watering needed. The standard is one inch of water per week during this time.
Remove Debris
Make sure you remove the leaves and other organic debris on your lawn. If you leave the leaves, fallen tree branches etc., it may lead to bacteria and disease, and can suffocate your grass. Let it breathe!
Lawn Traffic
Use sidewalks, etc. to enter into your home. Reduce or completely avoid allowing heavy traffic on the lawn. During the winter, the grass becomes dormant and is brittle and weak. Due to the frost in the morning, grass is more susceptible to damage.
Aerate
Depending on the type of lawn you have, it is best to either aerate in the fall or winter time. Tall Fescue lawn is best in the winter since it still is rooting during the fall.
Weeds
Numerous types of weeds thrive during the cold winter months so you can still apply weed control.
Existing Lawn Care
Depending on the weather, temperatures and the type of lawn you have, your existing lawn care may still need to be continued. Talk with a Lawn Care Company regarding mowing, edging, watering, aerating, weeding, etc. for a specific plan for your lawn.
