As far as liquid termite products, there are repellant products, and there are non-repellant products. There may be others, but these are the only ones that I am familiar with.
Repellant products do exactly what they sound like they do, they repel termites. Non-repellant products do not repel termites. It sounds like repellant products would definitely be the way to go, right?
Imagine that you are living in a home that already has active termites. The termites are in the exterior walls, as well as in some interior walls. You treat the home with repellant products. In theory, the repellant products should keep termites away from the home, but what about the one that are already there? The termites are able to detect the repellant products, and will do everything they can to stay away from them. If you already have termites in your home, these products are practically trapping them inside of your home, keeping them there to continue doing damage.
The same holds true for any termite colonies that might be underground around the outside of your home. Sure the repellant product may keep them away, but it probably won’t eliminate them either. Now they’ll just move to your untreated deck, fence, or wooden storage building.
Now let’s imagine that you treated your home with a non-repellant product. The termites can’t detect the non-repellant. They have no idea that it’s there. They pass through the product unknowingly, and then carry traces of the product back to the colony, spreading it around to all of the other termites.
So which one’s better? The non-repellant definitely wins!
