Can termites fly? The short answer to this is, yes, termites can fly!
For the sake of this article, we are going to focus on subterranean termites, which are the most common type of termite in Georgia. A majority of the time, subterranean termites crawl underneath the ground, building mud tubes and tunnels to get up into your home.
There is a time of year, commonly referred to as “swarm season”, in which certain members of the termite colony will grow wings and fly around, in search of new places to establish a colony. Our swarm season usually occurs near the end of February to the beginning of March, but can vary based on weather conditions. There is usually a second swarm season as well, which normally occurs later in the year.
Although these particular termites can fly, they are known to be very poor flyers, only being able to fly short distances. Once they find a suitable place to invade / establish a new colony, they will drop their wings off of their bodies. One of the common signs that we look for when inspecting for termites during the time of swarm season is piles of wings left behind by these termite flyers.
